Sri Lanka
Bakery training centre
Bringing development is more than giving money! With this slogan "Top Bakkers" supports DutchConnect in building and exploitation of a bakery training center in Baddegama in Sri Lanka.
Attention and action! Baddegama is situated in the south of Sri Lanka. It is in a region that was heavily affected by the 2004 tsunami and now is slowly recovering. However help started directly after the tsunami, the aid mainly focused on short term shelter and food distribution. Structural and sustainable development and construction were less important at that point. For Top Bakkers this was the reason to support DutchConnect in its training initiative and put there bakery skills and knowledge in use to generate money and production resources to bring sustainable bakery development to Sri Lanka.
Dumburu roll To generate money for construction of the bakery, we introduce the Dumburu roll. It is a brown roll with rice flour. During the coming months, this roll will be sold by all connected Top Bakkers to store- and business customers. The revenue of this roll is donated to the bakery training centre.
20 Bakery students each year. The building process of the training centre will be finished in May / June 2008. During the building period, two selected young Sri Lankan man will be trained by “bakker Wim” in Breda, The Netherlands. Subsequently 20 students each year will be educated to become skilled bakers.
